One of my favorite views of Edgemont’s sanctuary is outside at night. I’m sure you’ve observed how beautiful it is lit up by the lights. It would be a great card to send to people outside our congregation so they can appreciate the ambiance and experience the warmth as it reflects the light. I’m hoping it will snow this winter and I get to see how the bright white will illuminate the place where we bask in the presence of God on Sundays. One of my favorite verses from Psalms (36:9) says, “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” Another psalm (119:105) reminds us that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. The light of God in Christ turns us into a spiritual work of art as we reflect the image of our creator.
An old song, and I do mean old, told about Jesus as our lighthouse. It was a worshipful moment when we would sing it together:
There’s a lighthouse on a hillside that overlooks life’s sea
When I’m tossed it sends out a light that I might see
And the light that shines in darkness now will safely lead us o’er
If it wasn’t for the lighthouse, my ship would be no more
And I thank God for the lighthouse, I owe my life to Him
Jesus is the lighthouse and from the rocks of sin
He has shown a light around me, that I might clearly see
If it wasn’t for the lighthouse, tell me where would this ship be
Edgemont UMC is a lighthouse for God as we reflect Christ’s love and grace to those around us. This Advent season, we can cherish our sanctuary where we worship and experience the presence of God. We can also take the light into the dark and stormy places around us so they experience God’s radiance in Christ too.
Shine Jesus, Shine,
Pastor Dean
